Cowboys make a significant WR move

Although Gallup only had 408 receiving yards in the previous campaign, he did manage six catches for 103 yards in the Cowboys’ playoff defeat to Green Bay (102).

The Dallas Cowboys appear ready to let go of wide receiver Michael Gallup after six seasons. The Cowboys selected Gallup, the ninth receiver selected overall in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft (81st overall), out of Colorado State. In March 2022, the player signed a five-year, $62.5 million contract extension with the Cowboys.

However, in 14 and 17 games, and 11 and 13 starts, respectively, Gallup only managed 424 and 418 throwing yards in the previous two seasons. Furthermore, the organization has now granted him authority to pursue a trade, according to a Saturday night report from Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News:

With the general belief that Gallup will be released, Watkins pointed out that the Cowboys might have trouble finding a trade partner for Gallup. Even without that, there might have been a small market for him. Although he had career highs in 2019 with 66 receptions, 1,107 yards, and six touchdowns, he did not do as well the following year, only managing 843 receiving yards and five scores. (That being said, he did register six receptions for 103 yards this season in the team’s playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers, trailing only CeeDee Lamb.)

Despite dealing with a calf issue in 2021, Gallup played in just nine games, amassing 445 yards and two touchdowns before tearing his ACL in Week 17. He hasn’t achieved as much, though, even in the more comprehensive seasons that have come after. Given that Gallup just turned 28, he may still have several fruitful years ahead of him. However, teams’ assessments of him can vary depending on whether they believe he can return to his 2019–2021 form.

Taking into account the Cowboys’ receiving room before making this trade is also worthwhile. Gallup was listed as the team’s fifth receiver on the depth chart available on their website, ahead of Jalen Tolbert but below Lamb, Jalen Brooks, Brandin Cooks, and KaVontae Turpin. The decision by Dallas to part ways with Gallup may present an opportunity for Tolbert, who is in his third season with the team, to take on a more significant role, or it may suggest that the team intends to bolster its position elsewhere, either through the draft or free agency (where talks start on Monday and players can formally sign on Wednesday). We’ll see who the Cowboys select to take Gallup’s spot in Dak Prescott’s target group.
