With a shocking choice regarding Cole McKinnon, Rangers manager Philippe Clement astounds commentators.

Alan Rough claims that after making his first away debut for the Rangers this season against Benfica, Cole McKinnon must be “absolutely in heaven.”

In response to Philippe Clement’s decision to start the 21-year-old off the bench in the 2-2 Europa League match, the former Scotland goalie appeared surprised on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show on March 8. He also acknowledged that Clement is not scared to deploy his team despite continuous injury concerns.

Many young players were chosen in the team for Rangers’ trip to Lisbon because they lacked many attacking alternatives, yet the manager felt at ease starting the less visible midfielder in a high-profile match.

“I have to say in fairness to Philippe Clement, and he hasn’t mentioned it at times, they had injuries,” stated Peter Martin (13 m 50s). They continue to produce plays similar to the one that drew Benfica despite still lacking access to important players.

Rough answered, “Yes, they most definitely are.” Everyone entering the room is doing well. Last year, at Partick Thistle, young Cole McKinnon was put into a European tie.

I have no idea how that happened, but my goodness, he must be in heaven with that. He’s not afraid to include guys of this caliber. He knows they are excellent since he is training with them.

Although Clement would likely prefer not to have to switch up his choices as frequently, the Ibrox injury problems don’t appear to be getting any better.

It is commendable, though, that he is prepared to take this risk, as it demonstrates his faith in the supporting cast and should inspire players who understand they have a legitimate chance of making an impact.

Too many managers would rather play a senior player way out of place than believe in a young player, and they refuse to use anyone but the regular first team choices.

It was odd for McKinnon to come off the bench and replace goal scorer Dujon Sterling at the Estadio de Luz because he hasn’t been a part of the Rangers first squad since he scored on his debut against Hearts nearly two years ago.

The former Chelsea player, whose initial motivation for coming to Ibrox was reportedly partly due to the former manager’s link, was far lower on the hierarchy under Michael Beale earlier in the season. However, under Clement, he has shown rising promise.

Under the manager’s leadership, a team that seemed so unimpressive a few months ago clearly looks to be more than the sum of its parts. Although the manager’s big injury concerns are a serious concern, it somewhat lessens the blow to see unexpected players step up.

The fact that the Gers returned from Portugal with plenty of opportunities to progress in Europe despite the absence of so many players is expected to have contributed to his opposite number’s unemployment.

In other Rangers news, Lawrence Shankland gives the strongest exit hint yet, so the Light Blues will be on high alert.
