During Leeds United’s match against Sheffield Wednesday, Ilan Meslier, the goalkeeper, made a “shocking” play that drew criticism from Neil Redfearn.
Friday, March 8, at Hillsborough, Daniel Farke’s team defeated the Owls 2-0 to regain their position above Ipswich Town and go into the automatic promotion spots. Wilfried Gnonto and Patrick Bamford both scored goals after the break.
To Redfearn’s dismay, Meslier’s failure to stop a shot from Djeidi Gassama allowed Ethan Ampadu to clear off the goalline, almost halving the lead in the last minutes.
“That is shocking from Meslier, the goalkeeper,” he stated on talkSPORT on Friday, March 8, at 21:36. The ball bounces in front of him, so it’s challenging, but if Smith is a little bit more aware there, he has a tap-in.
“As it stands, he almost always crosses the line, but he’s much better from Sheffield Wednesday.”
Friday night’s performance was practically the ideal example of why Meslier is such a bothersome presence in goal for Leeds United. Before messing up his lines in the second half, the Frenchman made a fantastic stop in the first.
Fortunately, Ampadu was there to clear the ball off the line and pick up the pieces for the Whites stopper, sparing him from blushing. Although the ball’s bounce made it difficult, he ought to be performing better for a keeper at his level.
The 24-year-old has been connected to elite teams in Europe and England, but their lackluster performance on Friday night in the second half made it clear why they haven’t made a serious bid for him.
If Leeds does earn promotion to the Premier League this season, Meslier might not be Farke’s top choice if he can eliminate those kinds of mistakes from his game between now and the conclusion of the season.
