Left-back Celtic’s Brazilian counterpart SC Internacional has signed Alexandro Bernabei on a loan until the end of the 2024–2025 season.
The agreement was revealed in Brazil on Thursday, but it hasn’t been mentioned on the Bhoys’ official website or social media platforms.
Brendan Rodgers has now provided an explanation for the transfer, stating that the player’s true desire was to be playing football on a daily basis.
At a press conference, the Bhoys’ manager declared, “He’s a really, really good professional.” In the time I’ve been here and trained diligently every day, he has never given me a minute’s trouble. He wants to play, though, and he has to.
“I can only be forthright and honest when I tell that his chances are limited in this situation. The club he traveled with, who had an Argentinean coach, offered him the opportunity to play regular football in Brazil.
Rodgers went on, “Listen, it’s something that if I didn’t want it to happen then it didn’t have to happen.” in reference to the current lack of depth at left-back behind Greg Taylor.
“I’m comfortable enough in my squad to know that we will have covering in that position for the duration of the season. We may have alternative choices to play there as Liam Scales has already done.
There are only 12 games left in the current season, thus the depth of the squad shouldn’t be greatly affected by Bernabei’s departure.
This season, Bernabei has only made four starts, suggesting that he has been overused. Rodgers personally approved the trade because he feels comfortable with it.
With the Argentinian’s condition no longer a concern, Celtic can now sign a left-back alternative during the summer transfer window.
In order to rectify a significant shortcoming of the last two transfer windows, Celtic supporters will be hoping to see a player of true quality recruited in the position.
The 23-year-old’s contract with the Bhoys expires in2027, so it’s unclear if Internacional has the option to purchase him.
