According to pundit Stephen McGinn, Celtic have a young youngster that he thinks is superior to Alexandro Bernabei.
Since moving to Glasgow from Lanus in June 2022, the Argentine defender has had a lot of difficulty. And following yesterday’s transfer update, it appears that Bernabei is scheduled to depart the team after just 28 first-team games in the green and white hoops.
Therefore, with Greg Taylor as our only recognized first-team full-back, Celtic would be severely short-staffed at left-back if the 23-year-old were to finalize his move to Brazilian team Sport Club Internacional.
That is, unless Brendan Rodgers takes a quick peek at the Celtic B team. There is a player sitting in the wings who could provide the much-needed cover. That’s the word from McGinn.
McGinn stated on The Go Radio Football Show, “I’m probably glad he’s leaving.” I looked at what they scout for in terms of a left back when I looked at Alexandro Bernabei, and I know this sounds extremely harsh, but you look at the size first.
You think he’s incredibly little for a defender the moment you notice his size. That makes you believe that he must have exceptional ball skills.
With the ball, he is incredibly erratic. He occasionally has a decent cross and occasionally doesn’t. In the recent games he has played for Celtic, he has been in possession of the ball when it breaks down frequently.
He is not exceptionally fast, but he is swift. As demonstrated by the goal he recently surrendered, he is not good in the air and cannot protect his back post.
When you look at players like Mitchel Frame within the building, he must possess qualities that make him a better fit for Celtic, right?
And with the way he’s playing, I doubt we’ll see him on the field until the end of the year. I anticipate that Liam Scales, Mitchel Frame, or Anthony Ralston will be deployed as cover.
McGinn and I both agree on this. Although I acknowledge that Taylor’s form has made it tough for Bernabei to break into the Celtic first team, he hasn’t been able to take advantage of the opportunities that have come his way.
However, young Frame has the ability to develop into a very talented player for Celtic. The 18-year-old defender, who made his Champions League debut against Feyenoord, received great praise for his performance and didn’t seem out of place in the greatest league in Europe.
Though he hasn’t played since, perhaps he will get another opportunity before the season ends, given that Bernabei’s exit is expected.
The Celtic supporters will be hopeful that this is the start of the club’s aspirations to start bedding in some of our greatest Lennoxtown prospects to the Celtic first team, especially since Rodgers is giving players like young Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata a shot this season.
