Why Dan Casey wasn’t sent off for the challenge that hurt Ross McCausland during the Rangers’ loss to Motherwell is beyond Dermot Gallagher’s comprehension.
When the Light Blues winger departed Ibrox on crutches, the former Premier League referee watched the match on Sky Sports and responded, calling it a “really, really bad” one.
After going through on the Northern Irishman in the first half without receiving any punishment, Casey went on to score the game-winning goal in a 2-1 unexpected victory at Ibrox on March 2.
For an incident that left Rangers “really unhappy,” host Rob Wotton questioned “why on earth” it wasn’t a red card.
“I don’t know,” was Gallagher’s response. It’s a red card, in my opinion. It is an extremely poor tackle. Everything about the speed at which he moves. The boy was forced from the field and, I understand, went home using crutches. Not a very nice tackle.
It doesn’t matter if you win the ball first if you charge in with your studs up; if McCausland went off hurt, Casey definitely caught him.
Even when most witnesses disagree with the so-called “eye test,” officials frequently base their controversial decisions on occurrences that fit specific criteria.
It is peculiar, then, that the Casey challenge, which appeared to be out of hand and to put an opponent’s safety in jeopardy, was simply disregarded.
The fact that Connor Goldson avoided punishment for his lunge during the Rangers cup triumph against Ayr United may be cited by rival Rangers supporters, although the defender was fortunate to escape punishment and undoubtedly profited by Roy Syla’s injury.
The manager is even more frustrated since McCausland was benched on top of Philippe Clement’s long list of injuries, which also includes the absences of Todd Cantwell, Danilo, Oscar Cortes, and Abdallah Sima.
After the game, the Belgian said he wasn’t sure about the choice, but not everyone felt the same way.
In other Rangers news, following the unexpected loss, a new transfer verdict for Lawrence Shankland has been given.
