With his decision to remains at Liverpool last summer, Caoimhin Kelleher must be “pretty happy,” according to Jurgen Klopp. The Irishman is being given a chance
After starting the last four games in goal for Liverpool, Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to play in the coming weeks. Due to what Jurgen Klopp described as a “serious” issue, Alisson Becker will be sidelined for an extended period of time.
And that gives Kelleher more opportunities to play as Liverpool’s primary goalkeeper. This season, the Irishman has already kept goal for the team in 17 games, primarily in cup competitions.
Nevertheless, there are still five Premier League games remaining. In addition, Kelleher started in goal for the Carabao Cup final, where he was outstanding and perhaps even deserved to win Man of the Match.
However, the pressure is really getting stronger. After today’s match against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool will play in the Europa League again in midweek before hosting Manchester City in what is probably the biggest match of the season.
Kelleher will now play in that match, as well as the FA Cup match the following week against Manchester United. This might be a pivotal time in the 25-year-old’s career.
All of this leads Jurgen Klopp to believe that Kelleher is probably “quite happy” about his choice to stay at Liverpool and pursue his possibilities in the summer.
“An outfield player in a situation like Caoimhin would never come and ask and talk about these sorts of perspectives because they have 10 other positions,” Klopp stated. “It is a little different with a goalie, but it never got to the point where we had a conversation like, ‘You have to stay, shut up.'” It was just another typical talk regarding his future.
“Playing more games was the most crucial thing we could do to assist him in taking his growth to the next level. My perspective was exactly the same as the player’s.
He has now participated in numerous games, including many league, League Cup, and Europa League contests. I believe he would now be content with the choice he made in the summer, but you would have to ask him directly.”
You have to think that Klopp is in this room. But will it remain the same this summer? Kelleher now has the opportunity to greatly enhance his status in some of the most important games Liverpool can play.
