After a dismal season on loan with the La Liga club this term, Ianis Hagi, a loanee from UK Rangers, is unlikely to return to Alaves again next season, according to Inigo Minon.
After a sluggish start to life with Alaves this season, the El Correo journalist informed Chris Jack and the Rangers Review on Monday, February 26, that there is little possibility the Romanian international will return to Spain the next season.
It would be surprising if he signed a contract that would keep him at Alaves past the end of the season because his performances this season haven’t “earned” him a permanent move away from Ibrox.
Hagi will almost certainly represent Rangers in Euro 2024, but after this summer’s competition, it is still unknown where and for whom he will play.
When Micahel Beale made the decision to trade Hagi in the last stages of the summer transfer window, some Rangers fans were taken aback, particularly considering how well the Romanian had played in his limited time.
Many supporters were hoping that the 25-year-old would return to Ibrox ahead of schedule in the January transfer window because they thought he would provide a drive and inventiveness to the midfield that had been lacking.
A few months later, though, the Romanian’s future is still up in the air as it is unclear if he will play for Rangers once more. Philippe Clement might not require him for the upcoming season as a permanent transfer to La Liga already seems unlikely.
This season, Tom Lawrence and Todd Cantwell have shown promise under the Belgian, and Clement will almost definitely favor them in an offensive midfield role when healthy. Hagi finds it extremely difficult to consistently force his way into the starting lineup as a result.
Though a lot could happen in the upcoming weeks and months, it’s currently unclear what Hagi’s future holds.
