The news that star goalkeeper Jack Butland has committed to Rangers for the long term after writing off a move to Nottingham Forest will make Rangers supporters very happy.
For the first time, the top player at Ibrox, who is undoubtedly the best acquisition made by former manager Michael Beale, talked about Ross Wilson and Forest’s interest in him. He said that the response was not only a resounding no, but that he intends to stay at Ibrox for a very long time.
He declared:
It was a resounding nay. “This is happening, what do you want to do?” my agent asked. When I said “no,” he responded, “I agree.” It was a no from the beginning on all fronts because the club had already said no, and that was that. It was actually deadline day, and we were with the crew. That was it; we had all gone to a team event together. Not even a chance existed. It’s fun for me. There is just too much to accomplish and too much work to be done.
Too much work still to be done. Too much to do, and he’s having fun with being a Rangers player.
This is a huge middle finger directed at Forest, the Premier League, and the notion of relocating anytime soon.
The prospect of joining a team that is battling with FFP, points deductions, and not much going for them these days (they’re barely above the relegation zone) really didn’t appeal to Butland, whose stock is sky high and he’s now close to an England recall (more on that later).
More importantly, though, he has acknowledged that his top priority is to succeed at Rangers.
Considering that he already has a League Cup trophy—his first piece of hardware at the age of thirty—and that he still has a ton of work to do at Rangers, it’s clear that he may be content.
