to Stephen McGowan, Celtic secretly revealed a £119.9 million deal as the public’s attention was diverted by Rangers’ Europa League matchup with Benfica.
Writing on page 109 of the Scottish Daily Mail’s print edition on Saturday (23 February), the journalist said the Hoops’ interim financial results came out a week later than usual, showing a modest drop in the bank balance from £72.3million to £67.3million.
He continued, saying that while the Parkhead team battles the Gers for the championship this year, they should be “running away with the league and holding their own in Europe” if they were half as good at burying chances as they were financial reports.
Although Celtic has undoubtedly done well financially recently, there are concerns about how well that money has been used over the last several months.
Rangers are currently in a better position than their Old Firm opponents because Brendan Rodgers is having trouble motivating his players and some of their recent acquisitions are starting to play well.
While the Gers sit top of the SPL table, they are also through to the last 16 of the Europa League, where they have now learned they will face Portuguese side Benfica.
But after a lackluster performance, the Hoops were eliminated from Europe, and Rodgers, who rejoined the team last summer, now has expectations to meet at Parkhead.
After just a few months in charge, Philippe Clement has led to a spectacular reversal in the team’s fortunes at Ibrox, thus the Northern Irishman faces a tough opponent.
