Mauricio Pochettino is already making excuses before even facing Liverpool

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is on a very short leash. If the Blues don’t turn things around significantly before the end of the season, he could be the third manager given the axe in the Todd Boehly era.

Currently, the Blues are 10th in the Premier League and stand a long shot at qualifying for any sort of European football next season, as they already missed out on Europe by finishing outside the top seven last season.

At least Chelsea have been excellent in cup competition, so much so that they are in the League Cup Final against Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Before Sunday’s big fixture at Wembley, Pochettino is already making excuses, sounding like a social media fan complaining about “LiVARpool” with his latest posturing about the refs.

Poch told reporters ahead of the game, “We are Chelsea and we need to compete with the same tools. If they are better, well done… but [the referee] must be fair in every decision. The pressure is about not delivering the job for Klopp; no, the pressure is not to be part of the hype…”.

What on earth is he on about? Pochettino is ranting and raving about “the hype” and is bizarrely pointing at the referees as some sort of an excuse for a potential defeat to Liverpool when they could just as easily make calls against the Reds.

It’s never a good look for a manager to complain about the refs, and it’s never a good look for the manager to make vague, unconfident statements before a big game.

The fact that Pochettino has somehow intertwined both before even taking the pitch at Wembley is quite laughable and really a summation of the lack of leadership and confidence he’s inspired in Chelsea.

It’s hard for fans to get behind someone who seems to waffle so frequently in front of the press, backtracking and failing to take real accountability or sending an inspiring message of success.
