Marco Tilio, a Celtic loanee, scored a vital goal for Melbourne City to force a draw with Sydney FC, launching his career away from Parkhead.
The seven-time Australia cap joined the Hoops last June for £1.5 million, and he returned to City on loan following a lackluster spell in the Scottish Premiership. Before being sent back to the A-League, he only made two appearances for Celtic. After returning, he insisted that his lack of experience had prevented him from making an impression on Brendan Rodgers because of an injury he experienced before signing his five-year contract.
He also made the most of his opportunity away from Celtic Park, scoring his first senior-level goal at the Allianz Stadium in almost a decade. The winger grabbed a clearance from City goalkeeper Jamie Young to score a goal that demonstrated why Celtic were eager to sign the 22-year-old in the first place.
The ball was then buried beyond goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne as Tilio used a burst of pace to get around two defenders. The incredible strike, “Marco Tilio, welcome back to the A-League,” threw the Paramount commentary crew into a frenzy. From Scotland, Tilio returns with a goal.”
After the goal, Celtic supporters were left wondering why the winger, who played just 27 minutes in his two cameo appearances at Parkhead, was not given more opportunities. “Wait, you’re saying we had a winger with an actual end product?” asked a curious Hoops fan on X.
Regarding Mikey Johnston’s play for West Brom, another person expressed a similar sentiment, saying, “We have two wingers we’ve papped out on loan beating defenders and scoring goals.” Someone else added, “Would loved to have seen him get a chance with us.”
